Bears Suffer a 62-51 Loss to Maine

The Brown women's basketball (1-4) team fell to the University of Maine (3-1) on Friday night in the Maine Thanksgiving Tournament. The Bears are scheduled to play in the consolation game against St. John's tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

In the first four minutes of play, the Bears found themselves down 8-1 against the Black Bears from Maine. But a lay-up by freshman Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) and another one by Lena McAfee (Reston, VA), Brown was able to claw its way back into the game.

McAfee drained a three as freshman Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) sparked Brown by coming off the bench and scoring a quick bucket making the score 19-13 with 11:33 to go in the first half. But a seven minute scoring drought for Brown enabled Maine to gain a 12-point lead heading into half-time with the score at 33-21. Despite shooting 25 percent, the Bears were still in the game.

Maine came out firing in the second half as they put up 9 points in 2:08 of play to make the score 42-23. But stellar defense by Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) and senior Kathleen Barr (Lake Forest, IL), who both picked up steals leading to points, cut Brown's deficit to 42-31 in a matter of minutes. Another King-Bischof three put the Bears down 45-34 with 11:24 remaining in the game.

But the Black Bears shut down Brown's offense and shot up to a 58-40 lead, the biggest of the night. Freshman Lindsay Walls (Santa Cruz, CA) chipped in with two quick buckets, while senior Courtney Peters (Naperville, IL) and Johnson both added two to end the game in Maine's favor 62-51.

King-Bischof recorded her second double-double of the season as she poured in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Bears' loss. McAfee added 11 points and seven boards while Johnson added five points.

Brown, who had 23 offensive rebounds, out-rebounded the Black Bears 49-37. Maine shot 41.2 percent from the field as Brown shot 28.8 percent.
