Providence, RI - Fairfield University (1-2) held an 18-point advantage over the Brown women's basketball team (0-3) heading into half-time at the Pizzitola Center on Sunday afternoon. Despite a strong second-half effort where the Bears cut the deficit to just seven points, it wasn't even to overcome the sharp shooting Stags as Brown was defeated 75-65.
Dominating the boards throughout the entire game, Fairfield posted 28 rebounds to the Bears 16 in the first half. The rebounding never evened out as the Stags went on to out- rebound the Bears 51-33 for the game.
Leading the Bears was senior Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) with 15 points and one assist, followed by junior Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) with 11 points and three rebounds, while also dishing out six assists. The Bears' high rebounder was freshman forward Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) with six boards in 13 minutes of play as sophomore Catherine Schaper (Houston, TX) and senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) both grabbed four each.
The Bears showed a glimmer of hope as they made a run in the second half to cut the Stags lead to just eight with 2:07 remaining in regulation. A lay-up and free-throw by senior Kathleen Barr (Lake Forest, IL) and a free-throw by O'Neal brought the score to 66-58. O'Neal then got fouled going to the rim as she converted two more free throws to bring the score to 67-60. But that was as close as it would get as Fairfield's Meka Werts scored on a long inbounds pass and Baendu Lowenthan chipped in two free throws to end the game 75-65.
Fairfield's Lowenthal posted a double-double scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 boards. Tara Flaherty grabbed 12 rebounds and had seven points and Sara Wrice poured in 15 points.
The Bears will host Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21 before hitting the road to Maine for the Maine Thanksgiving Tournament from Nov. 24-25.
