Burlington, VT - In the consolation game of the TD Banknorth Classic at the University of Vermont, the Brown women's basketball team fell, 65-31 to NC State on Sunday afternoon.
Turnovers caused the Bears some havoc in the first half, picking up a total of 21 to NC State's 13. Sophomore Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) started Brown's offense with a deep three from the top of the arc, and then went on to sink two free throws before the Wolfpack went on a 22-0 run.
Freshman Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) hit a jumper with six minutes left in the half to end the Wolfpack's scoring spree, and freshman Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) netted a three. Then, freshmen Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) and Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) hit jumpers in the paint to bring the score to 31-12 to end the half.
Brown chipped away at its deficit in the second half, with buckets scored by sophomore Courtney Lee (Tavares, FL), Fitzpatrick, and sophomore Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA). Grace and Delk each drained a three to put the score at 57-28 with 6:21 remaining in the game. The Wolfpack took advantage of being in the bonus early, sinking 9-12 free throws in the second half.
Leading Brown in scoring was Fitzpatrick with seven points and five rebounds, followed by Delk with six points and four rebounds. NC State's Khadijah Whittington tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, and Gloria Brown added 10 points.
