Providence, RI - Senior Tanara Golston (Evanston, IL) broke the Ivy League single season assist record as she led Brown to a 76-66 win over Columbia in women's basketball action on Friday night.
Golston recorded her third double-double of the season with a team-high 21 points and 10 assists. With 2:11 left in the first half, Golston dished out her 179th assist of the season, breaking the Ivy League record. She now has 183 assists on the season.
The 5'8" senior went 8-12 from the field, including 2-2 from downtown to earn the double-double. Junior Holly Robertson (Cochrane, Alberta) added 18 points on 8-12 shooting along with eight rebounds.
Senior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) and sophomore Colleen Kelly (Rochester, NY) capped off Brown's four players in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore Sarah Hayes (Beaufort, SC) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.
After holding a slim lead through much of the first half, Brown went on a 13-6 run in the last 5:31 to go into the locker room with a 34-26 advantage. Robertson tallied 11 of her 18 in the half as she went 5-8 from the field. Mitchell poured in 10 of her 14 as well.
The Bears surged ahead in the second half, going up by as many as 18 with a 14-2 run midway though as Golston exploded for 17 second half points. Kelly added eight points in the final half as well.
Brown held Columbia, which was led by senior Sue Altman's 22 points, to just 33% percent shooting, including 30% in the opening half.
The win for the Bears secured wins over all seven Ivy opponents this season for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
Brown will close out the season tomorrow against Cornell at the Pizzitola Center. Prior to the game, Brown will pay tribute to its four seniors: Miranda Craigwell, Tanara Golston, Ragan Kenner and Nyema Mitchell.
