Providence, RI - The Brown women's basketball team (2-22, 1-9 Ivy) dropped a 65-41 decision to the Cornell Big Red (16-6, 9-1) on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Leading the Bears was sophomore Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) with nine points and sophomore Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Cornell and Brown traded baskets in the first half, as a jumper by senior Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) tied the game at 14 with nine minutes to go. But a trey by the Big Red's Laura Benson gave Cornell the lead, and a jumper and a three by Gretchen Gregg put the score at 24-14 with six minutes remaining. Cornell silenced the Bears' offense, but Brown bounced back with a three and a jump shot just inside the arc by Fitzpatrick to cut Brown's deficit to 33-21 heading into the locker room at the half.
Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA), Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) and Alexander each added a few second-half buckets to bring the Bears within 13 just eight minutes into the second stanza, but Cornell's Shannon Scarselletta and Benson combined for 15 points, and Kayleen Fitzsimmons lit up for nine to increase the Big Red's lead to 56-34 with 5:53 left in the game.
Junior Amy Ehrhart drained a three in the final four minutes of the game and Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) added a lay-up to put the score at 63-39 with 3:20 remaining. But with the Big Red shooting 50 percent from the field, the Bears couldn't come any closer, falling 65-41.
Leading the Bears was Fitzpatrick with nine points, as freshman Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) and Johnson each added six. Alexander cleaned up the boards with a game-high eight rebounds, followed by O'Neal, freshman Betsty Jacobson (Rochester, NY) and Williams each with four.
Cornell, who is currently in first place in the Ivy League, had three players in double-digit scoring, and was led by Lauren Benson's 11 points. Gregg added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Scarselletta added 10 as well.
The Bears will hit travel to Princeton on Friday, Feb. 29 for a 7:00 p.m. game, and then take on Penn on Saturday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in their final road trip of the season.
