PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's basketball team fell 72-66 to the Penn Quakers in an Ivy League contest at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday night.
Senior guard Rada Pavichevich (Norwood Park, IL) led three players in double-figures for Brown (5-19, 2-9 Ivy) with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore forward Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) also came up big for the Bears with her sixth double-double of the season by notching 13 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tanara Golston (Skokie, IL) chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds for Brown.
Sophomore center Miranda Craigwell (Dorchester, MA) helped to solidify the inside effort for Brown with nine points and five rebounds.
Penn jumped out to a 35-31 lead at halftime as the Quakers shot 43 percent in the first half. The Bears were paced by Pavichevich in the early going as the senior came through with 11 first half points.
In the second half the Quakers took control of the game with an early 11-1 run that made the score 51-37 with 13:46 remaining.
The Bears clawed their way back into the game over the next two minutes with an 11-2 run of their own to pull within five points of the Quakers at 53-48 with 10:59 left to play.
Trailing by 12 points with five and a half minutes left, Brown made one final run at Penn. Mitchell capped off a 7-0 Bear run with a layup that cut the Quaker lead to five at 68-63 with 2:51 left on the clock. Penn went on to score the next four points but Golston rattled in a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 72-66.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow when they host the Princeton Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
