Ithaca, NY - The Brown women's basketball team lost an Ivy League heartbreaker on Saturday evening at Newman Area. The Bears had as much as an 11-point lead in the second half, but the feisty Big Red was able to gain a lead with just five minutes remaining in the game to earn a 68-58 victory. Virginia McMunigal netted 24 points, including six three pointers to lead the Cornell offense, as junior point guard Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) led the Bears' attack with 13 points.
In an exciting first half that saw seven lead changes, the Bears headed into the locker room with a 32-30 edge over the Big Red. A lay-up by sophomore guard Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) tied the game at 10-10 at the 14:51 mark, but hot-shooting guard Virginia Mcmunigal nailed her third of five three's of the half to take a 13-10 advantage.
Sophomore forward Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) answered right back with a trey of her own, but McMunigal hit another to put its lead back up to three. The Bears held onto a lead until Cornell guard Lauren Benson hit a jumper from the top of the key to give the Big Red a 21-20 lead at the 7:31 mark. Cornell and Brown traded baskets, included two jumpers in the paint by Amy Ehrhart (Golden, CO), but the Bears were able to gain a six-point lead after junior point guard Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) went on a 6-0 spree for the Bears to put the score at 30-24 with 2:57 left in the first half.
But the Big Red wasn't going to back down, scoring the next six points to decrease its deficit to just two, 32-30, at the end of the half.
Brown came out hot in the second half, going on a 9-2 run to take a 41-32 lead in the first three minutes. A three by McMunigal sparked the Cornell offense, as the Big Red brought its deficit to just four at the 11:00 mark. Brown's Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) then checked into the game and scored the team's next five points to give Bruno a 50-43 lead.
A jumper by Shannan Scarselletta, and a three by both Benson and McMunigal brought the Big Red within one, 55-54, with 5:29 left in the game. A jumper by McMunigal gave Cornell its first lead of the half with 4:27 on the clock. Scarselletta nailed a jumper in the paint to increase the Big Red's lead, 58-55 with just under four minutes remaining.
Brown was forced to foul in the final minutes of the game, as Cornell was clutch from the charity stripe to end the game 68-58. The Big Red had two players in double-figures, as McMunigal netted 24 points followed by Benson's 14. The Bears were out-rebounded 37-29, and was held to 33 percent shooting in the second half.
Leading Brown was Lee's 13 points and six boards, followed by junior Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) and Delk with 12 apiece. Sophomore Betsy Jacbson did a great job on the boards for the Bears, pulling down a team-high eight.
The Bears host both Penn and Princeton next weekend in its final home games of the 2008-09 season, and then hit the road to finish the year with Harvard and Dartmouth.
