PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's basketball team was defeated in the final seconds for the second straight night as the Bears dropped a 51-49 decision to the Cornell Big Red at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday.
Senior Do Stevens hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining to put Cornell up by two as the Big Red held on for the victory.
The game stood tied at 49-49 when Stevens stole the ball from Brown sophomore Tanara Golston (Skokie, IL) with 26.3 seconds to go. Stevens drove the lane and was fouled by junior Ragan Kenner (Indianapolis, IN), which put Stevens at the line for two shots.
Senior Rada Pavichevich (Norwood Park, IL) led three players in double-figures for Brown (5-18, 2-8 Ivy) with a game-high 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists on seven of 14 shooting from the field. Sophomore Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) had a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Senior Erin-Kate Barton also added a double-double for the Bears with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high four assists.
The Bears won the battle of the boards, as they out rebounded the Big Red by a 53-43 margin and managed to shoot 37 percent from the field. Brown's defense held Cornell to a mere 24 percent shooting from the field for the game, including 19 percent in the second half alone.
Despite holding the Big Red to only 29 percent shooting in the first half, the Bears trailed 29-24 at halftime.
Next up for the Bears will be the Penn Quakers and Princeton Tigers on February 22-23 at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
