Bears Fall to Lions 59-58 in Final Seconds

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 59-58 decision to the Columbia Lions in the waning seconds of the game at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday evening.

Sophomore Nyema Mitchell's (Birmingham, AL) attempt at a winning layup bounced out of the basket with four seconds to go as the Bears went down to the Lions for the second time this season.

Senior Erin-Kate Barton (Portland, OR) hit one of two free throws with 48.6 seconds remaining to bring the Bears within one point of the Lions at 59-58. Brown got the ball back with 17.5 seconds and managed to go inside to Mitchell but her shot rolled around the rim before falling out.

Mitchell led Brown (5-17, 2-7 Ivy) with nine points and 10 rebounds. Juniors Ragan Kenner (Indianapolis, IN) and Heidi Egelhoff (Portland, OR) also chipped in with nine points apiece for the Bears. Senior Rada Pavichevich (Norwood Park, IL) had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Bears opened the game with an 11-0 run in the beginning of the first half as they did not allow a Lion field goal in the first five minutes of the game. At halftime Brown led 30-25.

The second half was a back and forth battle between the Bears and Lions that saw ten ties and five lead changes.

Brown will host Cornell on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
