Columbia Beats Brown, 56-52, in Overtime Thriller

New York, NY - In a thrilling overtime game, the Brown women's basketball team (1-17, 0-4 Ivy) fell to Columbia (5-13, 2-2 Ivy), 56-52, at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday night. Freshman Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) tallied her first career double-double with a team-high 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears came out ready to play as they dominated Columbia during the first stanza to take a 28-18 heading into the half. Sophomore Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) started off the Bears' offense with a three pointer, as the scoring then went back and forth between both teams throughout the half. With the game tied at 11-11 at the 13:26 mark, Brown's Williams and sophomore Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) combined for the team's next eight points to take the lead.
After the half, Columbia's Sara Yee went to work with a jumper and a three, and Danielle Browne threw in a lay-up to cut its deficit to just five at the 16:00 mark. The Bears stretched its lead back up to 11 with 7:46 left in the game, but the Lions' Lauren Dwyer converted a three-point play to bring it back down to nine.
Brown had just a two-point lead with just 2:30 left in regulation, but Williams brought it back up to three with a free-throw. Columbia's Katrina Cragg then hit a three with 1:37 left to tie the game at 45-45. Brown missed a couple key free-throws in the final minute of play, as Columbia headed down the court with the ball with 10 seconds remaining. Cragg nearly won the game on another trey, but just missed to send the game into overtime.
The Lions held a three-point lead with 1:14 left in the first overtime, but Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) sank three free-throws to make it 51-50 with 59 seconds to go. A few costly Brown fouls and stellar free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Lions ended the game in the Lions' favor, 56-52.
Brown shot 30 percent from the field and out-rebounded Columbia 54-44. Leading the scoring was Williams with 11 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Alexander and freshman Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) with 10 each. Sophomore Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) grabbed seven rebounds, while Jacobson pulled down six
Leading Columbia was Michele Gage with 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by Danielle Browne with 13.
Up next, the Bears will travel to Dartmouth on Friday Feb. 8 at 7:00 p.m., and then challenges Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 6:00 p.m.
