The Brown University Women's Basketball team remains undefeated in the Ivy League after defeating the Columbia Lions 71-66. The Bears are now 4-0 in the Ivy League and 10-7 overall.
The Bears were up 26-11 with nine minutes remaining in the first period when the Lions went on a 21-10 run to end the half putting Brown up by only four heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Lions came out strong in the second half and took the lead with a little less than 18 minutes on the clock. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the second half with six different lead changes and the Bears down by seven with six minutes left in the game.
Freshman Jackie Vocell (Atkinson, NH) made a jumper with 3:09 left on the clock and gave the Bears the lead. With key free throws and made shots down the stretch, Brown pulled away for the 71-66 victory.
Leading the way for the Bears was sophomore Holly Robertson (Cochrane, Alberta) who recorded 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. Robertson also pulled down four boards and added a blocked shot.
Freshman Sarah Hayes (Beaufort, SC) netted 16 points and led the Bears in rebounds with eight. Also scoring in double digits for the Bears were juniors Tanara Golston (Skokie, IL) with 12 and Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) with 11. Golston also accumulated four assists and three steals. Mitchell pulled down seven boards and recorded four blocked shots.
Freshmen Colleen Kelly (Rochester, NY) added seven points, five rebounds, and four steals and Vocell recorded five points and four assists.
Brown, now tied for first in the Ivy League with Harvard, will travel to Harvard this Friday the 7th for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off and then to Dartmouth February 8, for a 7:00 p.m. game.
