Providence, RI - Despite freshman Christina Johnson's (Oakland, CA) career-high 14 points, the Brown women's basketball team (3-14, 1-2 Ivy) lost to Dartmouth (7-9, 1-1), 61-44, at the Pizzitola Center on Friday night.
Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead with 14:27 on the clock with Fatima Kamara pouring in eight points, but sophomore Catherine Schaper (Houston, TX) put Brown on the board with a free-throw at 12:39 to make it 10-1.
Brown's next six points were scored by Johnson, while senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) hit a trey and a jumper to cut the Bears deficit, 22-12, with 1:10 remaining in the half. Senior Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) put in a jumper off the glass and freshman Lindsay Walls (Santa Cruz, CA) added a lay-up to put the score at, 22-16, heading into half time.
The Bears came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half, as King-Bischof nailed a baseline jumper and Johnson drove through the paint for a lay-up to put the score, 22-20, in the first two minutes of the half. But that is as close as the Bears would come to the hot shooters of the Big Green, who shot 42 percent for the game and went 15-21 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Megan McCahill (Highlands Ranch, CO) and McAfee both threw in back-to-back three's to put the score at 46-31 with 7:37 to go in the game, but Dartmouth pulled away again and ended the game, 61-44.
Johnson led the team with 14 points and three rebounds, and King-Bischof netted 10 points and grabbed seven boards. McAfee had a team-high three steals and ended with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when they will Blitz the Pitz and take on Harvard. There will be pom-pom and team poster giveaways, on-court contests and games, as well as free t-shirts for the first 100 children (while supplies last). The Bears will also be signing autographs after the game.
