Providence, RI - The Brown women's basketball team surged out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back as it completed a season sweep over Ivy League foe Yale on Friday night at the Pizzitola Center, 67-52. Senior Sarah Hayes poured in 24 points while fellow senior Colleen Kelly added 17. The Bears, who downed Yale last Saturday in New Haven, 51-47, went up by as many as 25 this time around, improving to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Hayes guided Brown to a 33-15 halftime lead, outscoring Yale herself with 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the foul line. The Bears made up for their poor shooting last weekend at Yale, going 12-28 for 43%. On the defensive end, Brown held the Bulldogs to just five field goals as they shot just 21%.
Brown opened the game with a 10-0 run, making its first five shots. The team got open looks throughout the half with great ball movement, leading to eight assists. Last Saturday, Brown totaled just seven assists for the whole game.
Yale got no closer then six points before the Bears pieced together a 17-5 run to end the half with an 18 point advantage.
In the second half, Brown opened up a 25 point lead, 42-17, and maintained a lead of over 20 through the 9 minute mark. Yale got the lead down to 13, 61-48, with an 11-1 drive but it was too little too late. A three by Kelly ended Yale's hope, giving Brown a 16 point edge with 3:28 left.
Hayes added six rebounds and four steals to her line in the box score while Kelly had another solid all-around game as well, posting five rebounds and five assists. Junior Lena McAfee added seven points and six rebounds.
Brown will wrap up non-conference play on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when it takes on South Dakota State. The team will return to Ivy action next weekend, traveling to Dartmouth on Friday and Harvard on Saturday.
