Poughkeepsie, NY - The Brown women's basketball team dropped a 67-46 decision to Marist on Tuesday night at the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Red Foxes built up a 23 point lead at halftime and held the Bears to just 26 percent shooting. The loss drops Brown to 5-7 on the season while Marist has now won nine straight games to improve to 9-4. Junior Ashley King-Bischof led the Bears with 15 points and six rebounds.
It was a low scoring affair in the early going as the Bears didn't get on the scoreboard until the fourth minute. Marist wasn't allowed many good looks either, making just three field goals in eight and a half minutes but went on to score 32 points in the final 10:36 of the half.
A three by Marist pushed it out to an 11-3 lead at the 11:37 mark with Brown continuing to struggle on the offensive end. The Red Foxes extended their lead to 11, 18-7, with 8:50 left until halftime with strong offensive rebounding by leading scorer Fifi Camara and the outside shooting of Kristen Vilardi and Sarah Smrdel.
Marist knocked down back-to-back three's to take a 29-12 lead by the 5:37 mark. The three-point barrage continued as the Red Foxes broke open the game with two more three's soon after.
The Red Foxes went 6-8 from downtown and shot 61% overall, helping them to a 43-20 halftime lead. A frustrated Brown saw several of its shots rim in and out as it tried to narrow the gap. The team shot just 29% and was out-rebounded 20-14. King-Bischof led Brown with seven points in the half while senior Sarah Hayes added six.
The Bears opened up the second half with an 8-2 drive, cutting the lead down to 17, 45-28, with 15:53 left to go. King-Bischof scored 8 of her 15 points in the second half but Brown didn't gain much ground, only getting as close as 16, 54-38, by the 8:41 mark.
Marist's key three-point shooting allowed it to maintain its commanding lead down the stretch while its defense held the Bears without a field goal for the final 9:23 of the game.
Hayes finished with 12 points and four steals in the loss. Camara led Marist with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Brown will begin Ivy League play on Saturday at Yale. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
