Providence, RI - Alex McGuire tallied 21 points to help lead the Army women's basketball team to a 64-44 victory over the Brown University Bears at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. Army increased its record to 8-5 on the season, as the Bears moved to 1-11. Brown's offense was led by freshman Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) with 10 points, followed by senior Amy Ehrhart (Golden, CO) with eight.
Senior guard Alex McGuire lit up for 16 first-half points to help the Army women's basketball team take a 35-14 advantage over the Bears heading into the locker room at halftime. The Black Knights jumped out to an 11-4 advantage in the first six minutes of the game, but two free throws by junior forward Natalie Bonds (Taveres, FL) brought the Bears within four. Junior forward Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) then nailed a jumper at the 11:22 mark, but the Bears were held scoreless for the next seven minutes of play as the Black Knights continued to build a 26-9 lead.
Alexander broke the silence with 4:36 left in the half with a lay-up underneath the basket, and Daniels checked into the game and scored a quick bucket to put the score at 33-15. Army's McGuire hit a jump shot with just two seconds left on the clock heading into halftime with a 21-point lead.
The Bears connected on just 6-28 shots, shooting 21 percent from the field, as Army went 12-21 from the field for 57 percent. The Black Knights dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Bears 21-9. Brown's offense was led by Bonds with five points, as Alexander chipped in with four.
Ehrhart and Daniels carried the Bears through the second stanza, combining for 15 of Brown's 30 points in that half. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) and a lay-up by Bonds decreased the team's deficit to 60-40 with three minutes left in the game. Alexander then tallied a lay-up with 45 seconds remaining in the game to bring Bruno within 19, but that was as close as the squad would come as Army earned the win, 64-44.
Brown improved its shooting in the second half, netting 10 of 27 shots for 37 percent. The Bears lost the battle on the boards, as Army out-rebounded the squad 40-22. Army's McGuire led the offense with 21 points, as Megan Evans tallied 13 and Erin Anthony earned her third double-double of the year as she netted 12 points and brought down a game-high 11 rebounds. Army shot 51 percent from the field for the game, and was 46 percent (6-13) from beyond the arc.
Daniels led Brown with 10 points, as Ehrhart chipped in with eight points and tied Alexander for a team-high four rebounds. Junior guard Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) dished out four assists and picked up five steals, as Bonds added seven points for the Bears.
The Bears will now travel to Washington D.C. to take on American University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Bender Arena.
