Women's Basketball Announces Team Awards, Honors Seniors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior guard Shayna Mehta and sophomore guard Justine Gaziano shared Most Valuable Player accolades as Brown University women's basketball announced its team awards and honored its seniors at its season wrap-up event on Wednesday night.

Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) earned Second Team All-Ivy and Academic All-Ivy honors this past season. She has scored 1,290 career points, ranking ninth all-time at Brown and made 196 career 3-pointers, ranking third all-time at Brown. This past season she ranked second in the Ivy League in points per game (18.5), second in 3-pointers made per game (2.8), and third in steals per game (2.2).

Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) gained Honorable Mention All-Ivy and Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament MVP accolades in 2017-18. She netted 20 or more points in each of 13 games and scored in double figures in 23 of 26 games played. She ranked first in the Ivy League in free throw percentage (.872), third in points per game (17.9), and third in field goal percentage (.486).

Senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) won the Bear Award, presented to the team's most efficient player on the defensive end of the floor. White finished her career with 203 career blocked shots, ranking fourth all-time at Brown and eighth in Ivy League history. This past winter she blocked 78 shots, the second-most in a single season in program history.

Freshman guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) gained the team's Coaches' Award. Leonidas earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week accolades on Feb. 19 after scoring a season-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting vs. Harvard and netting 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting vs. Dartmouth.

Sophomore center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) and freshman forward Morgan Clausen (Algonquin, Ill.) shared the team's Most Improved Player Award. Green posted four points and three rebounds in a season-high 17 minutes at Penn in the season finale while Clausen made a 3-pointer and grabbed two boards vs. Penn at home.

White and senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) – the Bears' all-time games played leader with 111 career games played – both received their white letter sweaters, the traditional gift bestowed upon Brown's seniors.

The Bears' freshmen – Jenna Benzinger (Williamstown, Mass.), Clausen, McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.), Leonidas, and Savannah Lewis (Westlake Village, Calif.) – all earned their brown letter sweaters, the traditional gift bestowed upon Brown's freshmen.

Bear Award: Janie White '18 (Clarksville, Tenn.)

  • Finished her career with 203 career blocked shots, ranking fourth all-time at Brown and eighth in Ivy League history
  • Blocked 78 shots, the second-most in a single season in program history
  • Ranked first in the Ivy League in blocks per game (2.9) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.6)

Coaches' Award: Dominique Leonidas '21 (Stone Mountain, Ga.)

  • Earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Feb. 19
  • Netted a season-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five assists vs. Harvard (Feb. 16)
  • Posted 15 points on 7-of-12 shots with five rebounds vs. Dartmouth (Feb. 17)
