Gaziano Scores 20, Women's Basketball Drops 67-56 Decision at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore guard Justine Gaziano scored a team-high 20 points, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 67-56 decision at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday night at The Palestra.

In their regular season finale, the Bears (15-12, 3-11 Ivy) pulled within 58-56 with 2:17 to play behind a 9-1 run before the host Quakers (20-7, 11-3 Ivy) scored the final nine points of the game.

Gaziano netted her 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. She scored over 20 points for the 13th time this season and 19th time in her career.

Junior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 12 points for her 24th game in double figures in 26 games played this season. She has 480 points on the season – the sixth-most in a single season in program history – and surpassed her total from last season (470) in four fewer games played.

Senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) played in her 111th career game, becoming Brown's all-time leader in games played. She finished the game with a career-high nine rebounds, hit a 3-pointer, and distributed three assists.

Freshman guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) netted nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point distance while freshman center Jenna Benzinger (Williamstown, Mass.) grabbed a career-high seven rebounds.

For the game, the Bears limited the Quakers to 38.3-percent shooting (23-of-60), but Penn held Brown to 31.3-percent shooting (20-of-64). Brown led 16-9 in second-chance points.

After the Quakers went up 33-20 early in the third quarter, Brown used a 9-0 run to cut the margin to 33-29. Benzinger scored a second-chance basket, and Gaziano hit a 3-pointer during the run. A layup from Gaziano made the score 36-33 at the 5:48 mark of the frame. Penn pulled ahead 45-35 before a trey from Dale stopped a 6-0 run. Penn led 48-38 heading to the fourth quarter.

Gaziano and Mehta both knocked down 3-pointers inside of the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to bring Brown within 52-47. After Penn went up 57-47, Brown used a 9-1 streak to trim the deficit to 58-56 with 2:17 left with a wing 3-pointer from Dale capping the run. The Quakers scored the game's final nine points to hold on for the win.

Brown opened the game with an 8-6 lead behind a pair of jumpers from Gaziano, a layup from senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.), and a basket from sophomore center Haley Green (Salem, Va.). After Penn went ahead 12-8, a 3-pointer from Dale cut the margin to 12-11. The Quakers led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Penn used a 12-0 run to pull ahead 24-11 with 4:18 to play until halftime. A corner 3-pointer from Gaziano broke the drought, and a wing trey from Reilly brought Brown within 27-17 at the 1:54 mark. A 3-point play from Mehta helped Brown stay within 30-20 at the intermission.

For Penn, Michelle Nwokedi scored a game-high 22 points with nine rebounds and five blocks. Beth Brzozowski netted 12 points, Eleah Parker grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds, and Anna Ross dished out a game-high five assists.
