White Posts Double-Double, Women’s Hoops Drops 77-62 Decision to Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior guard Shayna Mehta scored a game-high 17 points, and senior forward Janie White posted a double-double, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 77-62 decision to Princeton University on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears (13-6, 1-5 Ivy) trailed the Tigers (14-4, 4-1 Ivy) at halftime, 51-33, and could pull no closer than 15 points in the second half as the visitors built a lead as large as 25 points late in the third quarter.

Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) netted 17 points for the second straight night and added five rebounds and three assists. She has scored in double figures 17 times in 18 games played this year.

White (Clarksville, Tenn.) totaled her fourth double-double of the season on 15 points and a season and game-high 15 rebounds. She blocked three shots, and how has 184 career blocks, moving into 11th place all-time in Ivy League history.

Junior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) tallied 12 points, connecting on 4-of-6 field goals and 2-of-4 shots from 3-point distance. Sophomore guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) notched eight points and four assists, and junior forward Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) grabbed six rebounds.

Five Tigers scored in double figures as Tia Weledji led the way with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Leslie Robinson tallied 14 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while Qalea Ismail and Abby Meyers each netted 11 points. Gabrielle Rush scored 10 points, and Bella Alarie corralled 14 rebounds.

For the game, Princeton held advantages in rebounds (43-32), points off turnovers (17-6), second-chance points (21-13), and fast break points (15-4). Through the first three quarters the Tigers shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field, 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from behind the arc, and 100 percent (6-of-6) from the free throw line.

White scored Brown's first two baskets before a step-back 3-pointer from Steeves and a jumper from Mehta kept Brown within 13-11 at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter. After an 8-0 Princeton run, Gaziano made a corner triple to cut it to 21-14. The Tigers led 24-17 at the end of the first.

An old fashioned 3-point play from White, and 3-pointer from Steeves sliced the deficit to 29-23 early in the second quarter before Princeton used a 7-0 spurt to pull ahead 36-23. A layup from sophomore center Haley Green (Salem, Va.), two free throws from senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.), and two baskets from White made the score 45-33 prior to Princeton taking a 51-33 edge into the locker room.

Mehta scored six of Brown's first eight points in the second half on a pair of jumpers and a reverse layup to keep the margin at 59-41 with 4:21 left in the third quarter. Princeton took its largest lead at 66-41 before two baskets from freshman guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) helped Brown pull back within 66-47. Princeton maintained a 69-47 advantage at the end of the third.

Second-chance baskets from Steeves and White allowed Brown to trim the deficit to 73-57 with 4:44 to play. Buckets from Mehta and Butler and a free throw from Gaziano made it 77-62 with 1:36 left.

Next, Brown returns to the road for games at Cornell (Friday, Feb. 9, 6:00 p.m., ESPN3/ILN) and at Columbia (Saturday, Feb. 10, 5:00 p.m., ILN).
