PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior guard Shayna Mehta scored a team-high 17 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 88-55, on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears (13-5, 1-4 Ivy) trailed 34-13 with 7:50 to go in the second quarter and could pull no closer than 16 points in the second half as the Quakers (12-5, 3-1 Ivy) – winners of three of the last four Ivy League titles, including the inaugural Ivy League Tournament last season – led wire to wire.

Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) connected on a trio of 3-pointers as part of her 17-point effort, while adding five rebounds and three assists. She scored in double figures for the 16th time in 17 games played this season.

Sophomore guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting and chipped in five rebounds. Senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and posted a game-best five blocks.

Freshman guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) tallied five points and four assists, junior forward Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) corralled six rebounds, and sophomore center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) netted five points.

Five Quakers scored in double figures with Eleah Parker leading the way behind a double-double of 18 points (9-of-13 shooting) and 10 rebounds. Beth Brzozowski scored 16 points, making 6-of-7 field goals and 4-of-5 treys. Michelle Nwokedi finished with 15 points and eight boards, Anna Ross totaled 11 points and a game-high six assists, and Ashley Russell netted 10 points.

The Quakers held a 38-22 advantage in points in the paint and connected on 13-of-35 shots (37.1 percent) from 3-point distance. Penn gained a lead as large as 36 points in the fourth quarter.

A wing 3-pointer from junior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) and a fast break layup from Mehta kept Brown within 7-5 after the Quakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Butler and Dale both made 3-pointers inside of the quarter's final 3:19 to keep Brown within 28-13 at the end of the first.

After the Quakers took a 34-13 lead early in the second quarter a pair of baskets from Gaziano made it 34-17. A conventional 3-point play from White, and jumpers from Gaziano and senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) made it 42-26 before Penn took a 44-26 edge into the locker room.

Gaziano hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter, and a 20-foot jumper from Dale cut the deficit to 47-31 at the 8:30 mark of the period. A step-back triple from Mehta made it 58-40 prior to the visitors gaining a 65-40 advantage at the end of the stanza.

A pair of 3-pointers from Mehta kept Brown within 70-46 before Penn used an 11-0 run to take an 81-46 lead. In the final four minutes, Green scored five points, sophomore guard Randi Richardson (Flint, Mich.) made a free throw, and freshman forward Morgan Clausen (Algonquin, Ill.) knocked down a 3-pointer to close the game's scoring.
