HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore forward Erika Steeves posted 17 points and eight rebounds, sophomore guard Shayna Mehta and freshman guard Justine Gaziano each scored 16 points, and Brown University women's basketball won at Dartmouth College, 65-62, on Sunday afternoon at Leede Arena.
In a game pushed back a day due to weather, the Bears (14-7, 5-3 Ivy) broke a 57-57 tie with 2:32 remaining with six straight points and connected on 12-of-14 free throws in the game to defeat the host Big Green (6-15, 1-7 Ivy).
With all eight Ivy League schools having played each other at least once through the first half of the conference schedule, Brown stands in fourth place in the league standings with its 5-3 mark.
Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) came within two rebounds of her sixth double-double of the year, netting her 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field to score in double figures for the 13th time this season.
Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) connected on 8-of-15 field goals for her 16 points and added five rebounds. Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) converted 8-of-8 free throws to lead the Bears' 85.7-percent shooting effort at the charity stripe. Mehta and Gaziano tallied double-figure performances for the 17th and 13th time respectively on the year.
For the game, Brown held an 18-6 margin in points off turnovers and an 8-0 edge in fast break points.
With the score tied at 57-57 with 2:32 remaining, Gaziano sank two free throws before sophomore guard Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) grabbed a rebound and went the length of the floor to put Brown up 61-57 at the 1:10 mark. A Will steal and four free throws from Gaziano gave the Bears the win despite a 3-pointer from Dartmouth's Kate Letkewicz with 29 seconds remaining.
Mehta scored the Bears first six points of the fourth quarter after an 8-0 Dartmouth run to tie the game at 52-52 with 3:54 left. Steeves followed with a 3-pointer from the wing off a Mehta pass to push Brown ahead 55-52 with 3:20 to go.
Trailing 29-27 at halftime, the Bears went ahead 33-29 early in the third quarter behind six points from Steeves. A 9-3 spurt including four points from Mehta and a 3-pointer from junior Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) gave Brown a 46-40 edge with 2:52 to play in the third. The Big Green responded with an 8-0 run to grab a 48-46 edge early in the fourth quarter.
Brown opened the contest with an 11-4 lead behind six points from Steeves and remained ahead 17-8 after the first frame as Gaziano scored the quarter's final four points. After the Bears gained a 19-10 edge, Dartmouth closed the first half on a 19-8 run to bring a 29-27 lead into the locker room.
For Dartmouth, Letkewicz scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting with nine rebounds while Isalys Quinones notched a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Next, Brown returns to the Pizzitola Sports Center to host Penn on Friday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. (ILDN/ESPN3, WPRV-AM 790) and Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3:30 p.m. (ILDN, WPRV-AM 790).
