PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore guards Shayna Mehta and Taylor Will each scored 18 points as Brown University women's basketball completed an Ivy League weekend sweep with a 69-60 win over Columbia University at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (13-6, 4-2 Ivy) outscored the visiting Lions (12-7, 2-4 Ivy), 19-7, in the third quarter to overcome a six-point halftime deficit and connected on 25-of-27 free throws (92.6 percent) in the game. Last night, Brown defeated Cornell, 72-67, in Ivy play.
Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) and Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) each scored in double figures for the 15th time this season. Mehta added a career-high six steals to her 18 points, and Will netted 6-of-13 field goals with five boards as part of her 18-point effort.
Sophomore forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) totaled 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, junior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) contributed eight points and six boards, and freshman guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) tacked on seven points on 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Brown held a 10-point advantage at the charity stripe, converting 25-of-27 free throws while the Lions made 15-of-24 shots from the line (62.5 percent). The Bears held Columbia to 30.8-percent shooting from the field.
Columbia's Camille Zimmerman – the Ivy League's leading scorer – finished with a double-double on game highs in points (21) and rebounds (13), but the Brown defense kept her to 29-percent shooting (7-of-24).
Columbia gained an early 12-6 lead before Steeves converted a driving layup and Mehta hit a 3-pointer to bring Brown within 15-11 at the 1:19 mark of the first quarter. The Lions scored the last six points of the quarter to bring a 19-11 edge into the second quarter.
Mehta scored 11 points in the second quarter beginning with a conventional 3-point play that sparked an 8-0 burst in 1:12 to cut the Bears' deficit to 21-19. A step-back jumper kept Brown within 29-28 with 4:20 left in the half before the visitors carried a 36-30 advantage into the locker room.
The Bears outscored the Lions 19-7 in the third quarter, making 10-of-10 free throws, and turning a 36-30 deficit into a 49-43 edge. Brown opened the quarter on a 13-3 run with Will connecting on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to help Brown pull ahead 43-39 at the 4:10 mark. A layup from White gave Brown a 49-42 edge, and the hosts led 49-43 heading to the fourth.
Neither side scored more than four consecutive points in the fourth quarter as the two teams traded baskets and free throws. A driving layup from Will put Brown up 59-52 with 3:45 left, and a Mehta step-back jumper made it 61-54 with 2:01 to go. The Bears connected on 10-of-12 free throws in the quarter to close the win.
For Columbia, Paulina Koerner logged 14 points and eight rebounds alongside Zimmerman's double-double.
Next, Brown travels to play at Harvard on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. (ILDN/ESPN3) and at Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m. (ILDN).
