NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Shayna Mehta scored a game-high 16 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Yale University, 81-54, in the Ivy League opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Lee Amphitheater inside Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (10-8, 1-0 Ivy) claimed a 38-27 lead at halftime and maintained a double-digit edge over the course of the second half on their way to the win over the visiting Bears (12-3, 0-1 Ivy).
Senior Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) netted 12 points to score in double-figures for the 13th time this season in 15 games. Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) reached double-digits for the eighth time.
For the game, Yale out-rebounded Brown 52-24, including 19-5 on the offensive end, and earned a 21-2 edge in second-chance points.
The Bulldogs opened the game with a 12-7 lead despite a conventional 3-point play from freshman Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) before Mehta connected on a corner 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 12-10 with 4:22 to go in the first quarter. Alexander hit a mid-range jumper to tie it at 12-12 before Yale closed the frame with an 18-12 edge.
Trailing 21-12 after nine straight points from Yale, Brown pulled within 23-18 at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter behind four points from Mehta and an Alexander layup. The hosts grabbed a 29-18 lead before Mehta made her second 3-pointer with 4:54 to go in the half. Yale took its largest lead in the half at 35-22 and led 38-27 at the break despite a trey from White.
In the first half, Yale held advantages in rebounds (26-12), offensive rebounds (13-2), and second-chance points (16-0).
Yale scored the second half's first six points and still led 46-29 at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter. Alexander netted five straight points on a jumper and a 3-pointer to bring Brown within 46-34 prior to a 6-0 run from the Bulldogs, which put Yale up 52-34. The hosts maintained a 57-38 edge before layups from White and Mehta trimmed the margin to 57-42 through three.
An old fashioned 3-point play from Alexander brought Brown within 63-49 with 6:08 remaining, but Yale responded with a 12-0 streak to gain a 75-49 edge with 3:09 to play.
For Yale, Nyasha Sarju paced the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Meghan McIntyre (13 points), Tamara Simpson (12), and Mary Ann Santucci (10) all scored in double figures.
Next, Brown completes the home-and-home with Yale on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. (ESPN3/ILDN) in its Ivy League home opener.
