JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Senior Jordin Alexander posted team highs with 14 points and seven rebounds, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Saint Peter's University, 79-67, at the Yanitelli Center on Wednesday evening.
The Bears (10-2) faced a 53-41 deficit to start the third quarter before pulling within 53-48 and trailed 69-54 before cutting the margin to 69-64 with 1:45 to go, but the host Peacocks (2-9) held off both rallies in the victory.
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) scored in double figures for the 10th time this season, and junior Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) totaled 12 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Sophomore Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) provided 11 points and five rebounds, eclipsing double digits for the second straight game while freshman Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) tacked on nine points and three steals.
Brown opened the fourth quarter with seven straight points, including five from Musgrove, to pull within 53-48 just 1:34 into the final stanza. St. Peter's later used a 9-1 run to take a 66-52 lead and gained an edge as large 15 points at 69-54 with 3:27 remaining.
The Bears rallied with 11 unanswered points to cut their deficit to 69-65 with 1:45 on the clock. Senior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio), Musgrove, and Alexander connected on 3-pointers during the streak, but the hosts made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Martin paced the Bears at the start of the second half, scoring the team's first five points and drawing a charge as Brown led 33-32 with 7:32 to go in the third. A jumper in the lane from Musgrove and a pair of free throws from freshman Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) allowed Brown to tie the game, 37-37, with 5:35 to play in the period.
The Peacocks then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull ahead 43-37 – the first lead greater than three points for either team – at the 3:04 mark and finished the third quarter on a 16-4 run to take a 53-41 edge into the final frame.
Neither side could gain a lead larger than three points in the first half as the two teams played within one possession of one another for the first 20 minutes and for the first 6:56 of the third quarter. Brown led 13-12 after the first frame as sophomore Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) connected on a wing 3-pointer with 59 seconds left in the stanza.
The Bears took an 18-17 edge after another 3-pointer from Reilly at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter and still led 26-25 after an Alexander mid-range jumper with 1:50 to go in the half. The Peacocks brought a 27-26 advantage into the locker room.
For Saint Peter's, Bridget Whitfield scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Talah Huges netted 16 points off the bench, Hala Mostafa posted 14 points, and Sajanna Bethea corralled a game-high 10 rebounds. The Peacocks connected on 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) shots from 3-point distance.
Next, Brown completes its New Jersey swing at NJIT on Monday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. prior to returning home to the Pizzitola Sports Center to take on Rhode Island College on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 12:30 p.m.
