Women's Basketball Drops Ivy League Opener to Yale, 70-53

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Emmy Allen recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting Yale Bulldogs (7-8, 1-0 Ivy) left the Pizzitola Sports Center with a 70-53 triumph over the Brown women's basketball team (6-9, 0-1 Ivy) on Friday night.

Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, N.J.) led the Bears with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field.  After missing last Saturday's game at NJIT, sophomore Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) recorded 10 points, her fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures.

Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) continued her strong play off the bench for the Bears as she tallied six points in 14 minutes of action.

The Bears and Bulldogs opened the 2013-14 Ivy League slate in a highly contested first half battle as Brown grabbed an early 15-10 lead before a 20-6 run from Yale, capped off by Sarah Halejian's jumper, gave the Bulldogs a nine-point edge with 2:46 to play.

Brown drew within four points on Ellise Sharpe's layup with 1:04 to play as the Bears were able to keep pace, led by Alexander's eight first half points.

Neither team could find their range from long-distance – combining for 4-of-26 (.154) on Friday night.  The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 10-3 run to extend its lead to 11 points on Meredith Boardman's layup with 12:35 to play.

The Bears answered with seven straight points of their own on the strength of buckets from Alexander and Clarke to cut the deficit to four.  Clarke's layup and foul appeared to swing momentum, but Yale would not let Brown get any closer as they responded with an 11-1 run in four-minute span to salt the game away.

Janna Graf (16 points) and Sarah Halejian (12 points) also scored in double figures for Yale as they notched its fourth consecutive victory at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The two teams will battle again next Friday in the back-end of their home-and-home series at Payne Whitney Gym.  The Bears look to triumph for the third consecutive time on the road against the Bulldogs.
