Annapolis, Md. – Despite erasing double-digit second half deficits the previous two games, the Brown women's basketball team couldn't find its shooting stroke as they dropped a 81-61 decision to Navy at Alumni Hall on Friday night. The Bears fall to 2-3 this season while the Mids improve to 5-2 overall. Brown will take on UMBC (1-6) in day two of the Navy Classic on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Shooting 46.8% from behind the arc, good for third overall in the nation, Brown just couldn't find its range on Friday night as they finished 7-for-27 from three.
Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, N.J.) led the Bears with 18 points – shooting 4-of-12 from the field and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. The senior co-captain has averaged 21.3 points per game over her last three contests.
Junior Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) added 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field.
Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) added nine points off the bench for Brown, including three treys in 11 minutes of action. Sophomore forward, Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.), provided a spark off the Brown bench with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting in 16 minutes.
Both teams struggled from the field in the early going as the Bears and Mids combined for just five points at the first media timeout. Brown was able to take a 14-9 lead but Navy responded with a 21-2 run of its own to take 41-25 lead into the locker room.
The Bears had no answer on the glass in the first half as the Mids held a 24-9 edge in rebounds during the first 20 minutes.
The host squad was able to extend its halftime lead, opening the second stanza with a 14-4 run to put the Bears in a deep hole. The three-ball had rallied the Bears in previous games, however, 4-of-15 shooting from behind the arc in the second half aided Navy in taking an insurmountable lead. Brown faced its biggest deficit of the season of 29 points with four minutes remaining before closing the game on 13-3 run.
The Mids registered four players in double figures, including Jade Geif, who tallied a team-high 13 points as Navy shot 56% from the field on Friday night.
