HANOVER, NH – The Brown women's basketball team used a 16-3 run at the start of the second half, to put away the Big Green, winning 59-39. Senior Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) passed the 1000 career-point milestone with 14 points in the Bears' victory. Brown improves to 9-16 overall and 2-8 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth falls to 4-5 in the Ivy League and 6-17 overall.
Sophomore Sophie Bikofsky (Newtown, MA) halted an early Dartmouth 5-0 run by sinking a three-pointer, 1:20 into the first half. After Dixon stole the ball from a Dartmouth player, Caroline King (Valencia, PA) tied the game at 5-5 with a layup. Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) gave the Bears their first lead of the night, 8-5, draining a three-pointer at 2:47. Dartmouth scored the games next five points over a nearly four minute interval. Clarke halted the run with a layup at 6:28, tying the game at 10-10. Natalie Ball (Orlando, FL) hit a jumper from the paint, giving Brown a two-point lead. A layup by Sophie Beutel (Toronto, ONT), nearly three minutes later, extended the Bears' lead to four, 14-10.
Dartmouth's Lakin Roland responded with two consecutive layups, tying the game at 14-14 with 5:35 left in the half. Dixon would give Brown the lead again, adding her first points of the night by finishing off a fast break with a layup. The basket would spark a 10-0 run for the Bears that included a Ball free throw, an Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, OH) layup, and a Dixon three pointer. Beutel finished the run, hitting a layup with 52 seconds left in the half. Dartmouth would close the scoring on a layup by Faziah Steen, with six seconds left in the half. Brown went into the intermission, leading 24-16.
Brown opened the 2nd half with a 16-3 run, opening up a 21-point lead. During the five-minute stretch, Bikofsky added two three-pointer while Dixon and Clarke each hit one of their own. Ball added a layup and Jordin Juker (Boise, ID) hit a jump shot during the run. A Dartmouth layup at 7:54 of the second half, cut the Bears' lead to 14, 42-28. However, Brown continued to hit from downtown as Clarke and Bikofsky connected from behind the arc. Nelly Weledji (Overland Park, KS) added a layup with 5:32 left in the game, making the score 55-34 in favor of Brown. Dixon would close out the Bears' offense, scoring layups with 3:10 and 1:22 remaining on the clock. These two baskets gave her 1000 and 1002 career points respectively. Jordyn Turner would score Dartmouth's last point on a free three with 45 seconds remaining.
In addition to her 14 points, Dixon added seven assists and six steals. Like Dixon, Clarke added 14 points for the Bears and Bikofsky scored 12. Beutel led Brown with 11 rebounds, nine of which came in the offensive zone. As a team, Brown out rebounded Dartmouth, 40-30. The Bears were 23 of 59 from the field, including 10 of 28 from behind the arc. Brown's defense was also solid, limiting the Big Green to 33% shooting from the floor and causing 20 turnovers.
Brown returns home next weekend, March 1st and 2nd, when it hosts Cornell and Columbia in a pair of 6:00 p.m. games.
