PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's basketball team (7-9, 1-1 Ivy) fell 59-47 to the visiting Yale Bulldogs on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Yale's Sarah Halejian led all scoring with 21 points and 10 rebounds to improve its record to 6-10 (1-1 Ivy), while Sophie Bikofsky led Brown with 11 points.
The Bears, down by just six points at the half, were not able to overcome Yale's 57 percent shooting in the second half as it outscored Brown 33-27 earning the 12 point victory. Brown went just 31 percent from the field for the game, and was just 4-of-16 from beyond the arc.
The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Bulldogs followed with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 12-6 lead. Rookie Ellise Sharpe scored the next four points, and Lauren Clarke nailed a trey to put the Bears ahead by one, 13-12 with 9:58 left in the half.
Yale had a one-point advantage with 5:51 on the clock, and then went on a 9-4 run to head into halftime with a 26-20 lead.
After the half, Yale extended its lead to 10, but a 7-0 run by the Bears brought the squad within three at the 15:36 mark. Then, Yale outscored Brown 15-7 to push its lead up to 11, its largest of the night, with 8:44 to go.
Bikofsky, who hasn't missed a free throw since Brown's NJIT game on Jan. 15, hit two free throws with 6:04 left in the game to cut the Bears' deficit to four. Yale answered with a 10-2 run to take a 12-point lead with 3:46 left and the Bears were not able to recover.
Freshman Natalie Ball added 10 points and five points, followed by nine points, five boards and five assists from Lauren Clarke.
The Bears will now host Dartmouth at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 1, and Harvard at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.
