Bears Defeat UMES in Terrapin Classic Consolation Game

College Park, Md. – Led by Sheila Dixon's 20 points and six rebounds, the Brown women's basketball team earned a 57-46 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in the consolation game of the Terrapin Classic. For her efforts, Dixon earned All-Tournament team honors. The Bears improved to 4-6 on the year, while UMES dropped to 4-8.

Dixon's game-high 20 points was on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. Adding to the scoring was junior point guard Lauren Clarke with 12 points and four assists, and sophomore Sophie Bikofsky grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added six points.

Brown went 37 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, and built as much 13-point advantage after eight consecutive points by Dixon midway through the half. The Hawks went on 10-4 run over the next five minutes to bring the score to 26-19 at the 4:21 mark. UMES continued its comeback scoring four straight points to cut its deficit to 26-23 at the intermission.

Karona Roach scored the first four points of the second half, and Shawnee Sweeney followed with a trey to give the Hawks their first lead of the night, 30-29, just two minutes in. But the Bears forged ahead and regained possession of the lead after a Dixon jumper, capped off by a jumper by junior forward Sophie Beutel to lift the Bears to a six point lead with 14:06 remaining in the game.

A three pointer by senior Lindsay Nickel increased Brown's lead to nine with 2:59 left on the clock, and free throws by Clarke pushed the Bears' leads to 11 with 41 seconds to go and to win the game, 57-46.

Brown shot 35 percent from the field (20-57) and held UMES to just 20 percent (14-67) for the game. The Hawks out-rebounded brown 56-40, as Alexis Udoji led the effort with a game-high 12 boards.

Leading UMES was Karona Roach with 13 points and six boards, followed by Jessica Long with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Bears are back in action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6 against Army at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
