Bears Defeat Harvard at Home for Second Straight Year
Providence, RI- Four Bears scored in double figures to lead the Brown University women's basketball to a 58-55 defeat over the visiting Harvard Crimson for the second straight season at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The victory improved Brown to 15-8 overall and 6-3 in the Ivy League, while the loss dropped Harvard to 12-10 overall with a 5-3 mark in the league.
Junior guard Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) and senior co-captain Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) led the Bears in scoring with 12 points apiece, with Dixon adding five rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) pitched in with 11 points and five rebounds and sophomore point guard Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) netted 11 points and handed out four assists.
The Bears gained its largest lead of the night when the squad started the second half on a 10-2 run to gain a 41-27 lead, but the hard-nosed Harvard Crimson were able to come back within two after a free throw by Victoria Lippert with 45 seconds remaining in the game. Bruno hung on as Passafuime sank one of two free throws to give Brown a 58-55 lead with 11 seconds to go and the Bears shut down Harvard on the other end to earn their second straight win over the Crimson at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears came out fired up in the first half and despite the four ties and three lead changes, Brown ended the stanza with a 31-25 lead over the Crimson.
The game was tight throughout the half. The Crimson pulled away first to gain a 17-11 lead at the 10:30 mark, but Brown's Lauren Clarke hit a three and Lindsay Nickel hit a jumper and a trey to even the score at the 8:08 mark. Another three pointer by Nickel sparked the Bears as they grabbed a 29-22 lead with just three minutes remaining in the half.
The Crimson scrapped their way back and a three by Berry evened the score at 22-22, but a 9-3 run by the Bears gave Bruno a six-point advantage and the momentum at the intermission.
Brown started the second half on a 6-0 run to jump out to a 37-25 lead, and continued to build one of its largest leads of the night, 43-30, after a layup by Passafuime at the 13:35 mark.
The Crimson came back with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 43-35 with 10:00 left in the game, but the Bears answered right back with an 8-0 run to extend their lead back up to 12 with 9:00 on the clock.
A jumper in the paint by Christine Clark put the Crimson within three of the Bears with just 1:18 remaining, and Victoria Lippert put in the first of two free throws with 45 seconds left to cut Harvard's deficit to two before Jean Marie Burr called a 30-second timeout.
Passafuime took a charge with 12 seconds to go on a Brogan Berry layup attempt to put the ball back in Brown's possession, and a foul by the Crimson put Passafuime on the line. Passafuime made one of two and the Bears secured the 58-55 victory.
The Bears ended the game shooting 34 percent from the field and went 32 percent (7-22) from beyond the arc. Harvard finished the contest shooting 31 percent from the field and went just 29 percent from the three. The Crimson out-rebounded Brown 56-36, and was led by Christine Clark's 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears will host Dartmouth College at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
