Bears Capture Dead River Company Classic Title; Aileen Daniels Named Tournament MVP

Orono, ME- Junior Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) led the Brown women's basketball team with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals to a 61-59 overtime victory against the University of Maine to capture the 2011 Dead River Company Classic title.   The victory improved the Bears to 3-3 overall, while the Black Bears dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Senior co-captain Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) was named the tournament MVP after combining for 29 points and 13 rebounds against Evansville and Maine, while senior co-captain Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) received All-Tournament Team honors after netting 25 points and grabbing 16 boards in both games.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, and while the Maine Black Bears were able to tie it up, Brown built its lead right back up and gained a 19-10 advantage after a layup by junior Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) with 7:36 remaining in the first half.

But the Black Bears weren't going to go down without a fight in their own championship game, and went on a 14-8 run to end the half down by three. 
After the intermission, Maine took its first lead of the night when Courtney Anderson hit a three pointer with 7:27 to go to give the Black Bears a 43-42 edge.  But Brown's Dixon hit a three down at the other end to give the Bears a two point lead, as the Bears never let it go.   Maine's Ashleigh Roberts then hit a layup with 19 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 56-56 to send the game into overtime. 
Sophomore point guard Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) scored the first two points in overtime by knocking in two free throws to take a 58-56 lead, but Maine evened the score after a jumper by Corinne Wellington.   Maine then took a one-point lead after a free throw by Wellington, but Clarke then hit a layup with 1:02 on the clock and drained a free throw with two seconds left to clinch the 61-59 victory for the Bears at Alfond Arena. 
Nickel was 6-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc with a team-high 15 points.  She also grabbed seven rebounds, had six steals and two assists.  Also scoring in double figures for Bruno this afternoon was Dixon with 13 points and two assists,  Daniels with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Clarke with 11 points and three rebounds. 
The Bears shot 37 percent from the field and went 31 percent from three point range. 
Ashleigh Roberts led the Maine offense with 15 points and five rebounds, followed by Courtney Anderson with 11 points and three rebounds.  Maine out-rebounded Brown 59-36, and leading the effort was Samantha Wheeler with eight boards and Corinne Wellington with seven.
