Brown Defeats Evansville in Dead River Company Classic, 55-47
Orono, ME- Senior co-captains Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) and Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) netted 17 points apiece to lead the Brown women's basketball team to a 55-47 victory over the University of Evansville to open up the Dead River Company Classic on Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena. The win improved the Bears to 2-3 on the year while the Purple Aces dropped to 0-4.
The Bears and Purple Aces battled back and forth during the first 20 minutes of the game. The score was tied six times and the lead changed hands nine as the score was even at 26-26 at the intermission.
Tied 8-8 at the 14:42 mark, Daniels hit a jumper to give Bruno a two-point edge, but a layup by Evansville's Staci Gillum tied the game up for the third time at 12:54. Passafuime drained a three with 8:32 on the clock , but Chelsea Falkenstein put in a jumper and a layup by Briyana Blair gave the Purple Aces a one-point edge. Blair made a jumper with 16 seconds remaining in the half to take a two point lead, but Passafuime tied the game up for the sixth time with just a couple seconds left on the clock to head into the locker room tied 26-26.
Evansville opened the second half on a 13-4 run over a span of seven minutes to take a 39-30 lead, but the Bears tied it up at 44-44 after a layup by Daniels at 6:09. Sophomore Lauren Clarke hit a three pointer with 2:49 to go in the game to give Brown a two-point lead, a lead it would not relinquish. The Bears ended the final minute of the game on a 7-1 run to close out the game with a 55-47 victory.
Daniels lit up for a season-high 17 points tonight going 7-of-9 from the floor. She also grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists. Passafuime also scored 17 points tonight and was 6-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc while grabbing eight rebounds.
Adding to the offense was Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) with eight points, five assists and two steals, and Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) added five points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
The Bears will now match up against the winner of the Maine vs. Troy game be playing at 6pm.
