Balanced Attack Leads Bears to 65-53 Victory over Albany

Providence, RI- Sophomore point guard Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) led the Brown women's basketball team with 17 points and nine rebounds to help the Bears to a 65-53 victory over the visiting Albany Great Danes on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center to give the squad its first win of the 2011-12 season. The victory improved Brown to 1-2 on the young season as the loss evened Albany to 2-2 on the year.

Clarke scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half as she went 5-of-8 from the floor, including a 5-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Her nine rebounds, as well as Sheila Dixon's eight and Lindsay Nickel's seven helped Brown out-rebound the Great Danes this evening, 43-35.

The Bears gained a lead right from the start taking a 16-5 lead midway through the first half after a jumper by senior co-captain Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA). Brown continued to built a lead and pushed it up to 16 after a jumper by rookie Katie Mahoney with 33 seconds remaining in the half, sending the Bears into the locker room at halftime with a 27-11 lead.

A three pointer by Clarke extended Bruno's lead up to 18 just five minutes into the second half (34-16), but Albany began chipping away it its deficit. An Ebone Henry three pointer with 7:38 remaining in the game brought the Great Danes within three of the Bears, and she followed it up with another just a minute later that put the score at 46-45 with 6:17 on the clock.

At the 5:20 mark a layup by Sarah Royals gave Albany its first lead of the night, but it was quickly the Great Danes' last as the Bears went on a 9-1 run in a two minute span to take a 55-48 lead. The Bears didn't look back as they built their lead up to 12 after two free throws by Clarke to end the game 65-53.

Dixon added to the Bears offense tonight with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Passafuime knocked in 12 points and brought in three boards. Lindsay Nickel also combined for 10 points and grabbed seven boards.

Leading Albany was Ebony Henry with 20 points and eight rebounds, followed by Julie Forster with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, November 22 against in-state rival Bryant University. Brown will tip off in Smithfield at 7 p.m.
