Women’s Basketball Opens 2011-12 Season at 7:30 PM Tonight vs. UNH

Providence, RI- The Brown women's basketball team opens up its 2011-12 season tonight when it hosts the University of New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

All home games can be viewed live, for a fee, via America One, and Mike Mancuso will be calling the action all season long on Brownbears.com radio.

Tonight marks the Bears 957th game as Brown opens its 38th season of varsity play when it takes on the University of New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. in its first of four double headers with the men's basketball team.


Brown and New Hampshire are meeting for the 18th time on Friday as the Wildcats lead the all-time series, 10-7. Brown has defeated UNH in their last three meetings, including a 66-54 win last year in Durham on Nov. 20, 2010.


Brown is 14-23 in season openers, with its last season-opening win coming in the 2005-06 season in a 72-62 defeat over Fairfield. Last year, the Bears fell 64-54 to Albany on November 12.


The Bears will travel to NJIT for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the Highlanders on Sunday, Nov. 13.  The squad then travels back home to the Pizzitola Sports Center for their second doubleheader with the men on Saturday, Nov. 19 with the women tipping off against Albany at 7:30 p.m.


Jean Marie Burr enters her 24th season at the helm of the program and is the winningest coach in Brown basketball history (men's and women's). Burr has compiled 15 winning Ivy League seasons, including three consecutive League Titles from 1991-94. In 1994, Brown made Ivy League history as it was the first team in the conference to appear in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. She has also led Brown to 11 top-three finishes in the league. She recorded her 200th career victory during the 2002-03 season, and enters this season with 289 wins.


Aileen Daniels '12 and Hannah Passafuime '12 have been named co-captains for the second consecutive season. Daniels and Passafuime were the only two players who started and played in all 28 games last season, as Daniels led the front court averaging 8.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while Passafuime added 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game to help guide the backcourt.


Sheila Dixon '13 a Second Team All-Ivy selection returns to the lineup to lead the Bears squad this season ... She was Brown leading scorer and rebounder with 11 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, and led the squad in scoring and rebounding nine times. Earned four double-doubles last season and was named the Ivy League Player of the Week one time. She was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Hawk Holiday Classic and at the Brown BEAR Classic.


Lauren Clarke lit up for a career-high 24 points against the University of Rhode Island on December 8, 2010 going 6-of-8 from beyond the arc to rank second all-time in Brown's record books in three-pointers made in a game. Her performance that night earned her Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors.


Head coach Jean Marie Burr welcomes four players to the Class of 2015; Sophie Bikofsky, Maddy Page, Katie Mahoney and Nelly Weledji. Bikofsky, a 5-11 guard from Newton, Mass., helped lead Newton South to a 21-2 record and earn a Dual County League Championship with a 16-0 record averaging 18.5 ppg and 7 rpg. averaged 11.6 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game during her senior year ... Page, a 6-2 forward, was a First Team Pacific Coast League selection and a Sporting News Honorable Mention All-American. Mahoney, a four-year letter winner hailing from Bacon Academy, helped lead her squad to a 90-9 record in her four year career ... A two-year team captain, Mahoney was the Eastern Connecticut Conference scoring leader with 22.3 points per game, and set the Bacon Academy scoring record with 1,746 career points. Weledji was a four-year varsity starter from St. Thomas Aquinas High School ... During her senior season, the guard helped guide her squad to a Class 5A State Championship with a perfect 25-0 record.


Head Coach Jean Marie Burr enters her 24th season with the Brown women's basketball team and has an overall record of 289-320 ... Coach Burr is just 11 wins shy of earning her 300th career win.
