Women’s Basketball Travels to Albany for Start of 2010-11 Season

Albany, NY- Head Coach Jean Marie Burr and the Brown women's basketball team will begin the 2010-11 season when the squad travels to Albany for a 5 p.m. game against the Great Danes this evening at SEFCU Arena.

After a successful preseason with juniors Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) and Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) being named team captains, the Bears are ready to embark on another exciting season.

Passafuime, a 2010 Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection, led the team in scoring last year at 9.3 points-per-game as a point guard, while starting in 27 of 28 games. Daniels ranked third on the team in scoring with 7.1 ppg and saw action in all 28 games for the Bears. She went 75 percent from the free throw line and was second on the team in rebounds with 4.4 per game. Lindsay Steele (Erial, NJ), who also competed in all 28 games and started in seven consecutive Ivy contests, rounds out the Bears' junior class.

Brown finished the 2009-10 season 8-20 overall and earned a 5-9 mark in the Ivy League for a sixth place finish. The Bears graduated just three seniors from last year's edition, and are returning seven to the lineup, including two starters in Passafuime and sophomore Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA). The four members of the sophomore class all returned, and all saw substantial time on the floor gaining valuable experience that will help lead the Bears to a successful 2010-11 season. The Bears' bench will be strong and deep, as Burr added seven newcomers to the roster.

Albany, under the direction of first-year head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, finished 11-19 last season with a 4-12 mark in the America East. The Great Danes returned 12 letter winners, including four starters, including all-rookie picks Julie Forster and Ebone Henry. Forster led Albany and the league with 9.6 rebounds per AE contest, while Henry will be Albany's go-to scorer after averaging 12.4 points per game as a freshman.

Albany was picked to finish seventh in the 2010-11 preseason poll, selected to finish ahead of both Maine and New Hampshire.

After Albany, the Bears will travel to Central Connecticut State for a game at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 17, and will then challenge New Hampshire for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off on Nov. 20th. Brown's home opener will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 23 against Bryant University.
