Boston, MA- The Brown University men's and women's cross country team opened the 2010 season at the Boston College Invitational today at Franklin Park. The freshmen were able to gain valuable experience running in their first collegiate meet, and showed great potential for the upcoming season.
On the men's side, junior Nathan Chellman led the freshmen med through their first collegiate 8k race. Chellman crossed the finish line first for the Bears with a time of 25:47, while Drew Perilli followed behind with a 25:58. Also, Brendan Boyle earned a time of 26:13, and Colin Savage finished with a 26:24.
"The freshmen men experienced their first 8k today and showed great potential," said Miller. "It is also great to have Nathan Chellman and Ethan Hickey healthy and back racing. We still have work to do but I am excited about the future for the group who raced today."
The women raced a group of young runners today at Franklin Park. Alyse Rocco finished the 5k in 19:08, followed by Megan Fitzpatrick's 19:19. Aleyna LaCroix crossed the line in 19:27, Carolyn Ranti in 19:43, and Angela Rugino in 20:00. Rachel Baker earned a 20:06 and right behind was both Megan Palmer (20:09) and Emily Mepham (20:10).
"Today we raced some athletes with very little collegiate cross country experience to realize what it takes to be competitive over 5k," said Miller. "I am happy with the progress they are making in practice each day and look forward to getting more training and racing under their belts."
Rounding out the Bears' squad was Katie Williams (20:12), Caitlin Stone (20:13), Cara Harrison (20:21), Connie Emerson (20:30) and Sasha Teninity (20:32).
Both the men's and women's squads will open up competition for the majority of their top runners at the Iona Meet Of Champions next weekend at Van Cortlandt Park.
