Providence, RI - Former four-time All-American and Fresno State University head coach Shawn Charles has joined the Brown wrestling coaching staff for the 2006-07 season. Charles boasts coaching experience at some of the country's top wrestling programs, including the University of Nebraska and Oklahoma University.
After an accomplished 11-year career as an assistant coach, Charles was hired as Fresno State's head coach prior to the 2005-06 season. In his first season, Charles coached the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in the NCAA Western Regional and had one wrestler placed on the NWCA All-Academic Team. However, the school's wrestling program was cut this summer.
Prior to his year at Fresno State, Charles had spent time as the top assistant at several nationally ranked wrestling programs. He spent four seasons, from 2001 to 2005, at the University of Nebraska, during which the Cornhuskers were ranked as high as third in the country and finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Tournament twice. He was the top assistant at Central Michigan before that, from 1997 to 2001, helping coach the Chippewas to two NCAA top 10 finishes. Central Michigan won three consecutive MAC Tournament championships during that time. Charles' first job as a top assistant was in 1996-97 at Oklahoma University. That season, the team finished seventh at the NCAA Championship.
He started his coaching career as the second assistant at Iowa State from 1993 to 1995, then spent a year at Phoenix College as an assistant. In all, Charles has coached 20 All-Americans, two National Champions, and three members of the NWCA All-Academic Team.
During his college career, Charles became the first four-time All-American in Arizona State history, placing fifth, seventh and in second place twice over his four seasons. He was a two-time PAC-10 Conference Champion at 126 pounds, a two-time East/West All-Star and won the Las Vegas Collegiate Open twice. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Charles was a three-time Arizona state champion. He graduated from Arizona state with a degree in computer information systems.
Charles also boasts plenty of international freestyle wrestling and coaching experience. He was an alternate and coach on the 1996 Olympic freestyle team. In 1998, he won the U.S. Open and was on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the Goodwill Games. He was a member of the U.S. Freestyle team for seven years. He has won international tournaments in the United States, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, and Canada. A silver-certified USA Wrestling coach, Charles was an assistant coach on the 2003 World Cup team and was the head coach of the 2002 Ukraine international team. He has also coached the Sunkist Kids Club in Arizona.
Charles currently lives with his wife, Jill, and two children, Shawn Jr. and Titus.
