Brown Wrestling Announces Class of 2009

Providence, RI - The Brown University wrestling team has announced that it will welcome 11 members from the class of 2009 to the squad next season. All 11 were state qualifiers with three recording championship titles from their respective states.

Ross Baldwin, hailing from New Providence High School in New Jersey was a two-time state qualifier, recording a seventh place finish as a junior at 119 pounds. Also from New Jersey is Tom Fazio, the reigning New Jersey State Champion at 145 pounds. Fazio, who attended Lakeland High School in Wanaque, NJ, placed seventh at the prestigious High School National Tournament.

A total of three members from the class of 2009 are natives of New York. Both Mark Bloom and Chris Musser wrestled at 152 pounds and placed second and fourth respectively at the New York State Tournament this past season. Bloom attended Geneva High School and also placed third as a junior at the state tournament. Musser, who hails from Vestal High School, took fourth his junior year at the state tourney. In addition, Garden City High School product Chris Reilly will join the Bears next season. He was a New York State qualifier and section eight county champion.

Two-time New Hampshire state champion Zach Zdarda will join head coach Dave Amato's team in the fall. Zdarda, who placed third at the New England Championships as a junior, is a graduate of Timberlane Regional High School. Branden Stearns hails from Edinboro, PA where he graduated from General McLane High School and was a two-time Pennsylvania state qualifier.

Brown will welcome Wisconsin natives Travis Fischer and Matt Gevlinger next season. Fischer, out of Elkhorn High School finished fifth as a junior and senior at the state tourney while Gevlinger, who attended Mineral Point High School, won the 171 pound state title in his second appearance at the championships this past year.

Rounding out the class of 2009 are California natives Leonard Marandino and John Triggas. Marandino was a two-time state qualifier out of Shasta High School while Triggas placed fifth at the state championships for Campolindo High School. In addition, he finished eighth overall at the esteemed high school national tournament.
