Brown Wrestlers Compete at NCAA Championships

ALBANY, NY - Four Brown wrestlers competed at the NCAA wrestling championships on March 21-23 at the Pepsi Center as the Bears finished sixty-fifth in overall team scoring.

Junior Clint Frease (Clearwater, FL) went 1-2 at 141, junior Jason Mercado (Pitman, NJ) went 0-2 at 149, sophomore Nick Ciarcia (Berlin, CT) went 0-2 at 197 and senior heavyweight Bronson Lingamfelter (Boxborough, MA) went 1-2 for the Bears.

Frease was pinned by Virginia's Sean Gray at 2:43 in his first match of the tournament, but came back with a victory over Jonathan Masa of Hofstra to advance in the wrestlebacks. In his next match, Frease dropped a 12-5 decision to George Mason's Rob Becker.

Mercado fell by a 12-3 major decision to JaMarr Billman of Lock Haven in his first match before dropping a close 13-9 decision to Travis Shufelt of Nebraska.

In 197-pound action, Ciarcia lost a 14-3 major decision to Owen Elzen of Minnesota in his first match. Ciarcia was just barely defeated in the wrestlebacks as he dropped a slim 6-5 decision to Lock Haven's Avery Zerkle.

Lingamfelter started off with a 6-1 decision over Matt Brink of Michigan in the heavyweight bracket. In his second match, Lingamfelter was pinned by Leonce Crump of Oklahoma at 4:39. Lingamfelter lost in the wrestlebacks to Kevin Hoy of Air Force by a 4-0 decision.
