Mock, Savino Earn Wins in Bears' 31-9 Loss to #15 Cornell

Feb. 22, 2008

Ithaca, NY - Senior tri-captains Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) and Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) earned victories as the Brown wrestling team (7-8, 3-6 EIWA, 2-2 Ivy League) lost to #15 Cornell (7-5, 4-0 EIWA, 4-0 Ivy League), 31-9, at Friedman Wrestling Center on Friday night. Mock took a victory by pinfall in the second period of his heavyweight match, and Savino won a narrow 5-3 decision at 141.

The dual began with a tight match at 165 between junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) and Cornell's Mike Mackie. Musser scored the only takedown of the match to take a 2-0 lead in the first, but Mackie was able to escape before the end of the period. After a scoreless second, Mackie chose down to start the third and scored a reversal to take the 3-2 lead with 1:45 remaining in the match, eventually taking the win.

Cornell jumped out to a 12-0 lead after 10th-ranked Steve Anceravage pinned freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, OH) at 174 and 17th-ranked Josh Amone won a 10-5 decision over junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) at 184. Next came another one-point match at197 between junior Leo Saniuk (Akron, OH) and Justin Kerber. Kerber scored a first-period takedown, but Saniuk quickly escaped, as Kerber took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Kerber chose down in the second, but Saniuk was able to ride out the period, building 1:43 of advantage time. Saniuk chose down to start the third, and escaped after just six seconds, but a Kerber take down with 1:21 remaining was the difference, as Saniuk was only able to escape after Kerber rode his advantage time to under a minute.

Mock got the Bears their first points in the next match. After a scoreless first period, the Brown senior scored a pin 32 seconds into the second period for six team points. However, the only other match that was close was Savino's 5-3 win over Nick Bridge at 141, as the Brown captain scored two takedowns and an escape to top Bridge, who scored on three escapes.

On Saturday, Brown finishes up its dual season at Columbia at 2 p.m. That will be the Bears' final tune-up before the EIWA Championship at Franklin & Marshall on March 8-9.
