Bears End Dual Season With Loss to #12 Cornell, Win Over Delaware State

Feb. 17, 2007

Providence, RI - The dual season came to a close for the Brown wrestling team (6-12, 4-7 EIWA, 2-3 Ivy) on Saturday, as the Bears fell to #12 Cornell (9-5, 5-1, 5-0), 28-10, before defeating the outmanned Delaware State Hornets, 42-7. Juniors Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) and Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ), and sophomore Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) picked up wins against the Big Red.

In the day's opening match, the Big Red opened a 17-0 lead after a pin, tech fall, and two decisions. Schell stepped up at 133 and took the day's first win, a hard-fought 2-1 decision that was decided by riding time. Savino, who was tied with Corey Manson after two periods, pulled away in the third, starting down, escaping, and getting a takedown plus riding time for the insurance points. Two matches later at 157, Fazio had two takedowns and a three-point near-fall to win 12-1 for a major decision. At 165, Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA), wrestling up a weight class because of injuries, nearly got a win, getting a reversal after starting the third period down to tie the score at 4-4. However, his opponent, David Post, escaped, giving him a 5-4 victory.

The Bears' match-up with Delaware State, which took place after the Hornets had already squared off with the Big Red, was not much of a match at all. Delaware State forfeited at four weight classes, and an injury default gave the Bears another six points. Sophomore Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) started the dual with an 8-2 decision. Savino picked up a 9-2 decision in the next contested match, then freshman Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, NJ), who was up 7-4 in the second period, won via an injury default. Fazio then picked up the final Brown win of the Delaware State dual, pinning his opponent in just 50 seconds.

In two weeks, the Bears will compete at the EIWA Championship, held at East Stroudsburg University.
