PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown wrestling team lost to the seven-time defending Ivy League champion University of Pennsylania Quakers by a 23-15 score on Saturday afternoon.
Brown looked strong early, winning five of the day's first seven matches. Senior Karl Rittger (Glen Gardner, NJ) started things off with a 6-5 decision over Marcus Schontube at 184. Sophomore Nick Ciarcia (Berlin, CT) scored on an escape in sudden-death overtime to defeat Mike Faust by a 2-1 score at 197. Senior heavyweight Bronson Lingamfelter (Boxboro, MA) scored on a takedown in overtime, beating Matt Feast 3-1.
At 133, junior Rob Apgar (Easton, PA) scored a reversal and near fall in the closing seconds of his match, giving him a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over Jeff Evileth. Junior Clint Frease (Clearwater, FL) held on for a 4-3 win over Brett Vanderveer at 141, giving the Bears a 15-9 team lead with three matches to go.
However, the Quakers' nationally-ranked wrestlers swept Brown in the final three weight classes. Joe Henson posted a 15-2 major decision over senior Jason Mercado (Pittman, NJ) at 149, Yoshi Nakamura pinned senior Jesse Savage (Millsboro, DE) at 157, and Josh Henson defeated junior Chris Ayers (Newton, NJ) at 165.
The Bears fell to a record of 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
