Brown Grapplers Win One of Three During Boston Trip
Feb. 10, 2007
Cambridge/Boston, MA - Saturday was quite a full one for the Brown wrestling team (3-11, 3-6 EIWA, 1-2 Ivy), as the Bears traveled to the Greater Boston area for three duals. Brown lost to its two hosts, Harvard (4-6, 3-3, 2-1), and Boston University (8-7), but defeated Franklin & Marshall (7-6, 1-5 EIWA) in Cambridge.
The Bears began the day at Harvard for a pair of EIWA duals. Opening with Ivy opponents the Crimson, freshman Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, NY) and junior Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) got their team off to a flying start, pinning their opponents in 1:08 and 1:19, respectively. However, after Harvard's Max Meltzer, ranked 16th in the country at 141, narrowly defeated junior Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ), 5-4, in the second overtime, the Crimson went on a tear, rolling off seven wins in a row including Meltzer's win. Brown picked up one final win when sophomore Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, PA) defeated Andrew Knapp at 285, 10-3, to make the final score 27-15 in favor of Harvard.
The following dual against the Diplomats went far better for the Bears, who won seven matches including a forfeit at 184. Einfrank and Schell both each won their second match of the day, with Einfrank taking a 4-2 decision at 125 and Schell winning a 15-4 major decision at 133. Savino won 5-2 at 141 for three more points. Freshman Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, NJ) won a major decision at 149, 10-2, then sophomore Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA) made the score 19-0 Brown with an 18-1 tech fall at 157. Franklin & Marshall finally picked up a win at 165, which freshman Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) followed with a 10-3 decision at 174. A forfeit at 184 gave the Bears their final points in a 22-10 win.
After a break, Brown's caravan traveled the short distance to Boston University, where the Bears were defeated by the Terriers, 22-12. Sophomores Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ), Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI), and Zdrada got Brown's three wins in the dual. Fazio picked up six points for his team, as he pinned his opponent with just 10 seconds remaining in the match at 157. A major decision for Gevelinger at 184 and a 5-3 sudden death victory for Zdrada at 285 gave the Bears their final points late in the dual.
Next Friday and Saturday, the Bears will host four teams for their final home weekend of the year. On Friday, Wagner and Columbia will come to the Pizzitola Center, with Cornell and Delaware State coming in the following day.
