Providence, RI - Spurred on by the efforts of two senior captains and the return of another from injury, the Brown wrestling team (6-6, 2-4 EIWA, 1-0 Ivy League) swept a pair of duals at the Pizzitola Center on Friday. The Bears opened with a 31-10 win over Princeton (0-12, 0-4 EIWA, 0-1 Ivy) in their Ivy opener, then topped Boston University (6-7-1), 23-12, in a non-league contest.
Senior captains Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, IL) and Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) both won two matches, along with junior Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ). Senior captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI), out since Jan. 5 with an injury, made his return against the Terriers, winning a 7-6 decision.
In the opening match, Princeton was able to go up 3-0 with a win at 125, but from there it was all Brown. Schell dominated Robert Benitez from the outset at 133, scoring a pin just 69 seconds into the match. The Bears then took an 18-3 lead after Tiger forfeits at 141 and 149. Fazio scored four takedowns, a two-point near fall and a reversal in an 11-2 major decision at 157, and junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) scored five takedowns and an escape en route to a 12-6 decision.
Princeton took a narrow win at 174, as freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, OH) lost a close 2-0 decision to freshman Travis Erdman. The Bears passed on a forfeit at 184 with the score 25-6. Wrestling in his second match of the season, junior Leo Saniuk (Akron, Ohio) dominated, getting a 5-0 lead in the first on a takedown and near fall. He chose to start down in the second period, getting a reversal and scoring the pin at 4:16. In the final match of the dual, junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) recovered after two Princeton near falls in the first period, but could not come back, losing a 15-5 major decision to senior Sam Ritter.
The Bears were spotted a 6-0 lead in the second half of the doubleheader, as BU forfeited at 125. Schell took a commanding 8-0 win at 133, but the Bears were docked a point during the match for unsportsmanlike conduct, leaving the score at 9-0. Savino then took on the Terriers' Joey Whitaker in the day's most exciting match. The two were tied 4-4 at the end of the third period, and neither wrestler scored in the first sudden victory period. Each scored an escape in the ensuing 30-second periods before Savino finally took the win, 7-5, with a takedown in the second sudden victory period.
BU got its first team points with a win by Mike Roberts over sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) at 149, but Fazio got four points back with a 12-4 major decision over Carlo Ferrandino at 157 for a 16-3 Brown lead.
The Terriers were able to make a match out of it with decisions at 165 and 174, making it 16-9. At 184, junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) looked sharp in his first action of the day, scoring a 12-3 major decision to make it 20-9 Brown. Saniuk then lost, 7-3, at 197, but the Bears clinched the match, taking the pressure off Mock in a hard-fought 7-6 decision at heavyweight.
After the two relatively easy wins, Brown will have its work cut out on Saturday, as #25 Penn comes to the Pizzitola Center. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
