Grapplers Drop Tough 18-17 Decision To Drexel

Jan. 27, 2006

Providence, RI - The Brown wrestling team dropped a tough 18-17 decision to Drexel on Friday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Due to a weight violation, the Bears were forced to forfeit their 174 lbs. match, which proved to be the difference. Sophomores Jeff Schell, Mark Savino, Leo Saniuk and Levon Mock along with junior Shawn Kitchner, all recorded victories in the loss. Brown now falls to 4-4 on the year.

Schell got the Bears off to a strong start with his 6-0 win at 125 lbs. Drexel countered with a win at 133 lbs. but Savino pushed Brown out to a four-point lead with his major decision win at 141 lbs.

Drexel then went on to win the next two bouts at 149 and 157 lbs. Kitchner, who has been a huge bright spot for Brown this semester, gave the Bears a two-point edge, 11-9, with a 12-2 major decision at 165 lbs.

Brown's forfeit at 174 lbs. handed Drexel six points, allowing it to take a four-point lead. Freshman Matt Gevelinger was bumped up to 184 lbs. after freshman Branden Stearns did not make his weight and was edged out, 5-4.

Saniuk and Mock both earned another pair of victories as they have helped propel Brown to its last two wins but this time around it was not enough.

Brown will continue action at home tomorrow, facing Army at 10:30 a.m. and Lehigh at 3 p.m.
