Bears Drop Heartbreaker to Rutgers, 18-16
Jan. 20, 2007
Providence, RI - Despite holding a 16-6 lead with three matches to go, the Brown wrestling team (1-5, 1-2 EIWA) lost a tough match with Rutgers () on Saturday, falling 18-16 at the Pizzitola Center. The teams split the 10 bouts evenly, but six points on an injury default proved to be the difference.
After the Scarlet Knights won the first match, sophomore Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) got the Bears a 4-3 lead with a commanding 14-4 major decision at 184 pounds. Rutgers got the lead back with a decision at 197, but the Bears won four decisions in a row - junior co-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) at heavyweight, freshman Greg Einfrank (Millwood, NY) at 125, junior Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) at 133, and junior Mark Savino (Lawrenceville, NJ) at 141 - to take a 16-6 lead with three matches remaining.
After a Rutgers win at 149 in the first match of the season for sophomore Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA), the Scarlet Knights got their biggest boost. While holding a 1-0 lead in the first round of his 157-pound match, senior co-captain David Saadeh (Lancaster, PA) was forced to forfeit after suffering an injury. The six points got Rutgers to within one, and freshman Bran Crudden (Columbia, CT), who has been filling in for the injured Shawn Kitchner (Stratford, WI), dropped a tight 2-1 decision to end the match.
The Bears' slate will get even tougher next weekend, when they travel to Bethlehem, PA, to take on No. 25 Lehigh (9-6, 2-1 EIWA), which is coming off an upset of No. 11 Cornell.
