Bears Edge Out Boston University 16-15 In First Home Meet

Providence, RI - The Brown wrestling team opened up the home portion of its schedule with a 16-15 win over Boston University at the Pizzitola Center Saturday night. Freshman Jeff Schell along with juniors Dan Appello, Mike Savino, Mike Pedro and Doran Heist all recorded wins in their respective weight classes.

The match began with a narrow 3-2 loss for junior heavyweight Lee Beane against Courtney Howard. The Bears evened up the score at 3 a piece with a 7-2 win for Schell at 125. Appello gave Brown a 6-3 lead with a convincing 10-3 win over Brett Fimer, including three takedowns in the final period at 133.

Brown dropped its next two matches at 141 and 149, giving the Terriers a 9-6 advantage. Freshman Mark Savino had a 1-0 lead going into the final period by BU's Joseph Rivera got the win with a takedown and an escape in the third period. Junior Shawn Cully suffered a 4-1 loss to Rayes Gonzales at 149.

Mike Savino came up big for Brown at 157, picking up a 13-6 win to tie it up at 9-9. The score flipped back to BU's favor, 12-9, with a 5-0 loss by senior Heath Lohrman. A key 20-7 victory by Pedro at 174 pushed Brown to a 13-12 lead with just two matches left. Pedro executed nine takedowns to earn the big victory.

Heist gave Brown a 16-12 cushion with a solid 3-1 victory at 184 over Warren Haines. In the last match of the night, freshman Leo Saniuk fought hard and helped ensure the Brown victory with a tight loss, 7-5.

Brown is now 2-3 overall and will return to action next Saturday at 5 p.m. when it will host Rutgers.
