The men's wrestling team fell to Sacred Heart 16-14 Friday night. Sophomore Doran Heist (Meadville, PA) led the Bears with a 10-0 major decision over SHU at 184 pounds.
Brown, now 0-2 on the season, had an 11-3 lead in the 174-pound match on the strength of decisions by senior Adam Santee (Perry, OH) and senior Nick Ciarcia (Berlin, CT) at 197. Heist won a 10-0 decision over SHU at 184 to give the Bears the 8-point lead.
Sophomore Lee Beane (Bridgewater, MA) was defeated by Payam Zarrinpour 16-5, who is 18-6 on the season, which pulled the Pioneers within four. Freshman Nate Myers (Warwick, RI) was defeated by SHU senior Phil Kalil at 125 pounds to close the gap to one at 11-10. The Pioneers took the lead 13-11 when senior Mike Messina decisioned sophomore Dan Appello (Roselle Park, NY).
The Pioneers took a 16-11 lead when SHU outlasted Brown's junior Frank Gill (Laguna Hills, CA) at 141 pounds. The Bears needed a pin in the bout of the evening at 149 pounds, but SHU hung on to avoid a couple of near falls before losing a 9-5 decision to Brown senior David Dies (Akron, OH).
