The Brown University Wrestling Team competed in the Lone Star Duals Saturday, January 4, 2003. Brown ended the day at 3-1 as senior Clint Frease (Clearwater, FL) went 4-0 on the day. The Bears fell to Northern Iowa in the first round, but defeated Eastern Michigan, Wyoming, and California Fullerton to come away with three wins.
Northern Iowa defeated the Bears 28-7 in the first round with two grapplers coming away with wins in senior Clint Frease (Clearwater, FL) and junior Nick Ciarcia (Berlin, CT). Frease, who competes at 141, came away with a 2-1 victory as Ciarcia, 184, came away with a 12-4 win.
In the second round of the day Brown defeated Eastern Michigan 19-18 as senior Jason Mercado (Pitman, NJ) recorded the only fall of the day for the Bears at the 1:23 mark. Also grabbing wins over Eastern Michigan were freshman Dan Appello (Roselle Park, NJ) with a 14-3 win at 125, Frease at 141 with a 5-1 victory, and senior Chris Ayers (Newton, NJ) at 174 with a 7-3 win.
The Bears then went on to defeat Wyoming with a score of 19-18 in the third round of the Duals. Freshman Lucas Magnani (Islip, NY) came away with a 9-5 win at 125 as sophomore Michael Savino (Lawrenceville, NJ) who wrestles at 157 won 6-1 and junior Sean Jenkins (Schnecksville, PA) recorded a 9-4 victory at 165. Also winning in the third round were Frease 7-4, Mercado 8-0, and Ciarcia 6-3.
The fourth and final round of the day went to the Bears as they defeated California-Fullerton 21-13. Freshman Peter Gladish (Kentfield, CA) grabbed a forfiet win in 184 as Magnani came away with his second win of the day at 125, 7-2. Mercado grappled his way to three wins in 149 with a 7-3 victory as did Ciarcia with a 10-4 win at 197. Coming away with his second win of the day was Jenkins at 165 with a 12-6 win and walking away undefeated on the day was Frease with a final victory of 4-1 at 141.
The Bears now stand at 3-1 as they head into the Virginia Duals this weekend.
