LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After advancing to the second day of competition, junior 184-pounder CJ LaFragola dropped a decision in the consolation bracket to conclude Brown University wrestling's stay at the 36th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
On the second and final day of competition, LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) – ranked No. 16 and seeded No. 10 – dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 8 seed Steven Schneider of Binghamton in the consolation bracket.
After a scoreless first period, Schneider notched an escape and takedown to take a 3-0 lead after the second stanza. LaFragola countered with an escape in the third period to pull within 3-1 before Schneider added a riding time point for the final margin.
In a tournament that featured nine of the top 20 teams in the nation, Brown finished tied for 38th out of 46 teams in the team standings. The Bears finished ahead of fellow EIWA members Harvard (40th) and Bucknell (42nd).
Next, Brown competes at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., from Friday, Dec. 29 to Saturday, Dec. 30.

On day one of a tournament that featured nine of the top-20 teams in the nation, No. 16 ranked and No. 10 seeded LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) won three of his four bouts on the day to remain in contention for placing.
He opened the event with a 10-3 win over Connor Kirkland of Western Washington. After falling to No. 7 seeded Ricky Robertson in sudden victory, he responded with victories over Noah Stewart of Army West Point, 3-2, and Dylan Anderson of Minnesota, 9-6.
Three Bears – sophomore 125-pounder Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) junior 165-pounder Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and junior 285-pounder Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) – earned two wins apiece on the day. Viruet notched the team's lone pin of the day.
Keeley tallied victories over Drexel's Zack Fuentes (7-6) and Ohio State's Braken Mead (10-4), Viruet topped Fresno State's Isaiah Hokit (4-0) and Northern Colorado's Keilan Torres (Fall 6:56), and Butterbrodt edged CSU Bakersfield's Mark Penyacsek (8-2) and Binghamton's Connor Calkins (5-3).
No. 15 ranked and No. 7 seeded senior 157-pounder Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) earned one win over Cornell's Adam Santoro (9-4) while freshman 174-pounder Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) registered one victory over CSU Bakersfield's Brian Battisto (7-5).
In the team standings, Brown ranks in a tie for 38th out of 46 teams. The Bears stand ahead of fellow EIWA foes Harvard (40th) and Bucknell (42nd).
