Wrestling Opens 2017-18 Season at Bearcat Open on Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling will open its 2017-18 season at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday at the Events Center on the campus of Binghamton University.

LAST YEAR AT THE BEARCAT OPEN
Jon Viruet '19 (Springfield, Mass.) finished in third place at 174 lbs. to lead three place-winners for Brown at the 2016 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open. The Bears' other place-winners included Christian LaBrie '19 (Exeter, R.I.), who placed fifth at 165 lbs., and Michael Russo '18 (Jersey City, N.J.), who came in sixth place at 125 lbs. 

RETURNING NCAA VETERANS
Junior 184-pounder CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) returns for the Bears after making his debut at the NCAA Championships last season. As a sophomore he earned Second Team All-Ivy honors and ranked second on the team in wins (24), dual wins (11), dual EIWA wins (eight), and dual points (35).

The Bears welcome back senior 157-pounder Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) who qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2015 and 2016. In 2015-16, he gained First Team All-Ivy accolades and led the team in wins (30), dual wins (13), dual EIWA wins (10), dual points (48), technical falls (six), dual technical falls (three), and dual major decisions (three). 

THE CAPTAINS
Junior CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and junior Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) will lead Brown as captains during the 2017-18 season. Both Viruet and Staudenmayer will act as captains for the Bears for the second time in their careers. 

CLASS OF 2021
The Bears welcome eight student-athletes to the program in the Class of 2021. The members of the class include 184/197-pounder Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.), 285-pounder Evan Ellis (Greentown, Ind.), 125-pounder Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), 157/165-pounder Tanner Hood (Chesterfield, Va.), 133/141-pounder Hunter Kosco (Canal Fulton, Ohio), 174/184-pounder AJ Pedro (Methuen, Mass.), 165/174-pounder Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.), and 285-pounder James Valentino (Elk Grove Village, Ill.).

Next, Brown will compete at the Navy Classic on Saturday, November 18 in Annapolis, Md.
